If you wish there was a cosmetic treatment that could transform the appearance of your teeth, produce long-term results, and be made out of durable and strong materials, then veneers are likely the best option for you.
Porcelain shells are attached to your tooth enamel by filing down your natural tooth and bonding the veneer to replace this trimmed enamel, so it blends seamlessly into your smile. By covering up your tooth with a layer of tooth-colored porcelain, we’re able to cover up a range of cosmetic imperfections.
If you’re interested in veneers, contact us at Colonial Drive Preventative & Comprehensive Dentistry to schedule a consultation with Dr. Tommy Dorsey.
The veneers process starts with a consultation at our office with Dr. Dorsey. He will examine your teeth to rule out oral health problems and determine if you’re a suitable candidate for veneers. Disqualifying factors include severe orthodontic problems or extensive tooth damage and bruxism that is not being treated.
Next, we will determine the shade of your veneers by matching the shade of your natural teeth to a shade guide. Your veneers will be made of the same shade as your natural teeth. If you want to go whiter, you can get your teeth whitened before we do shade matching.
To prepare your teeth for veneers, we need to file down .5 mm of your tooth enamel. This is proportional to the thickness of the veneers and prevents them from sticking out. This change to your enamel is permanent and you will need to keep your teeth covered with veneers.
After preparing your teeth, impressions are taken and sent to a dental lab. Your impressions are used as a mold to create custom-fit veneers for each of your teeth. It takes a few weeks for fabrication so we will bond temporary veneers to your teeth during this appointment.
Once your veneers are ready, we will remove the temporary veneers. After checking the fit of the veneers, our dentist in Ocoee will bond them to your teeth and polish them.
Veneers are effective at covering up aesthetic problems like gaps, misaligned teeth, discoloration, awkwardly shaped teeth, teeth that are too small or too short, chips and cracks, and minor damage.
Porcelain veneers create the illusion of symmetrical, whitened teeth that are the perfect size and shape. They’re effective at covering up severe discoloration and can even be a substitute for orthodontic treatment in minor cases like small gaps or slightly crooked teeth.
Veneers last for up to 15 years, are highly durable, stain-resistant, and correct cosmetic imperfections for much longer than other short-lived cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening or dental bonding.
While it’s true that veneers are made of stain-resistant porcelain, they can become discolored over time just like your natural teeth. The most staining foods and drinks that you consume, the higher your risk for discoloration.
The best way to prevent this is through avoidance because veneers do not respond to teeth whitening as natural tooth enamel does. Avoid tobacco products, drink through a straw, and limit your consumption of staining foods and drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and dark sauces.
If you grind your teeth at night, you are at higher risk of damaging or breaking your veneers. If you suffer from bruxism, you must wear a mouthguard when you sleep at night.
You should also limit your consumption of hard, crunchy, and sticky foods which can wear down, damage, or dislodge your veneers. Never use your teeth as tools to open packages, chew on ice, fingernails, or other objects. Practice good oral hygiene and attend dental cleanings every 6 months.
